Dennis Ritchie, C Prog Creator, Dies at 70

Dennis Ritchie, a pioneer in computer programming, was found dead on Wednesday at his Berkeley Heights home in New Jersey. He was 70.

image

Dennis Ritchie has been in poor health after battling with prostate cancer and heart disease. He was living alone when he died. He is survived by his siblings Bill, John and Lynn.

The Harvard University graduate with degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics was the creator of C Programming and co-creator of the UNIX operating system. UNIX is where most operating systems we use today was based, even the one I'm currently using right now – the Microsoft Windows.

We have lost two important people in the industry of computers over the past two weeks. We first lost Apple co-founder Steve Jobs last October 5, and now we lost someone whose works have been used by computer companies such as Apple.

It may sound morbid to ask, but I can't help but wonder, who's next?

Google Chrome Remote Desktop BETA

image Google Chrome has just released a remote desktop extension that will let users access another computer or share their own computer with other Chrome users that they authenticate to give access.

Released on October 7, 2011, Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is now available for free at the Chrome Web Store where its description goes as follows:

Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is the first installment on a capability allowing users to remotely access another computer through the Chrome browser or a Chromebook.

The goal of this beta release is to demonstrate the core Chrome Remoting technology and get feedback from users. This version enables users to share with or get access to another computer by providing a one-time authentication code. Access is given only to the specific person the user identifies for one time only, and the sharing session is fully secured. One potential use of this version is the remote IT helpdesk case. The helpdesk can use the Chrome Remote Desktop BETA to help another user, while conversely a user can receive help by setting up a sharing session without leaving their desk. Additional use cases such as being able to access your own computer remotely are coming soon.

Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is fully cross-platform, so you can connect any two computers that have a Chrome browser, including Windows, Linux, Mac and Chromebooks.

Apple Unveils the Next Generation iPhone

In a few hours from now, Apple will be unveiling the much talked-about Next Generation iPhone (more popularly known as iPhone 5) at their headquarters in 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino.

The "iPhone 5" is expected to have a bigger touchscreen and faster processor than the current iPhone 4, but a source told Reuters that aside from a bigger touchscreen, the new generation iPhone also has better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera.

iPhone 4 sold more than 20 million units in the third quarter of the year alone, but Nielsen data show that iPhone's US market share in August was 28 percent, making it only second to Android's US market share.

The new Apple CEO Tim Cook is likely to take the stage at the launch. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is also expected to make an appearance but according to Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund which owns Apple shares, it wouldn't be critical if ever the former CEO wouldn't show up.

Smart Releases the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone

Smart Communications Inc. will soon release Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone, an entry-level Android phone to be added under the network's new netphone line.

image

It's good to note that Smart decided to keep the name of the phone's brand instead of calling it Smart Netphone <insert model # here>, just like what they did to their first release. Smart Netphone 701 is a ZTE Blade.

I think the reason is that Samsung is quite well-known here in the Philippines and many Pinoys actually trust the brand. By keeping the name, the network will attract more Pinoys to buy it.

Speaking of buying the Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone, Smart is accepting pre-orders from October 1 to 14, 2011. It's actually free at Data Lite Plan 500 and All-in Plan 800. But if you're on postpaid, its available for only P5,990.00. (Click here to reserve a unit.)

Specifications of Samsung Galaxy Y Netphone:
Android 2.3 Gingerbread
832 Mhz Processor
3G/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
2 MP, 1600×1200 pixel camera
Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
2.8 QVGA TFT Display
256MB RAM
164MP internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD
FM RAdio
GPS w/ aGPS support
Li-Ion battery 1200mAh
TouchWiz 3.0
